Call of Duty: World at War

We know there's a fifth Call of Duty game in the works, that it's being developed by Treyarch for multiple platforms, and that it brings us back to a World War II setting. This weekend, we finally get to see what it looks like.

Some of you will gladly welcome the announcement on the World War II first-person shooter (as I know I defiantly prefer this concept to any modern one), and the latest installment in the Call of Duty video game series. As far as we know it will be shipped in 2008 for PC, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360. The latest reveals, the game will take place in the Pacific areas of World War II. It has been revealed that the title for Call of duty 5 will be >> Call of Duty: World at War <<, the final name for Treyarch’s latest Call of Duty.

Game play

Swimming elements will be introduced to the series for the first time in single player and multiplayer. While in water, the player can not sprint and will only move at half speed. They are using the CoD4 engine (With improvements) for all the next-gen Consoles Including the Wii, such an advanced system is a first for this console.

Specific to the Wii version of the title will be use of Nintendo's Zapper peripheral, though word on how exactly it will be utilized has yet to materialize. We're hoping the game will maintain the series' traditional first-person shooter gameplay, but the announcement of Zapper functionality makes us wonder exactly how the game will function. The Wii version is being worked on by a separate team within Treyarch reckons it’ll be a much closer comparison between the next-gen and Wii versions than any other Wii game on the market.

Multiplayer

A major difference to previous titles, this will feature cooperative game play (two players via split-screen or four players online). Vehicles, first introduced in Call of Duty: United Offensive and also used on CoD 3 in multiplayer will return as well as new squad-based elements within multiplayer -- and so here's hoping we'll get a glimpse of the new mode in the trailer.

Plot

The opening scene of the first level called Maken Raid we are shown is a Japanese commander stubbing a cigarette out in the eye of a prisoner before slitting his throat – Shockingly the blood splatters and dribbles down the side of the tent you are being held in. The player's character witnesses this scene and is later rescued by US Marines who liberate the camp, thus starting the escape mission.

(other plot details will come as soon as they are available)

Development

World at War will have and is in a two-year development cycle, double that of Treyarch's previous title, Call of Duty 3 Which was amazing in my opinion. The game will be powered by an enhanced version of Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine – However improvements have been made to the physics engine and lighting model.

Flamethrowers have been said to be in the game with environments being more destructible and that can be set on fire. In thin wood bullets can also cut holes, and if big enough the player can climb through. Japanese forces will be the main enemy in this game, a first for the series that has previously focused on Nazi Germans.

Call of Duty: World at War will premiere this weekend on the Xbox Live Marketplace, and will only be available for download during those two days (June 21-22). There's no doubt that the trailer will be available here as well, but if you want to see it in glorious HD on your big-screen TV, you'll need to check in then.

We will get an official release date soon -- so far, only a "2008" date has been announced.
