Top 10 Greatest Consoles

Our team have given views on what we think are the top ten of all consoles and our reasons why.

10. Nintendo Gamecube

When I first saw this console a few years back I had the urge to throw a baloney sandwich in this lunch box. But, it’s hard to get angry at the company that gave us the Nintendo 64 and the multi purpose Wii, considering the amount of amazing games that were offered for the Nintendo Gamecube. Good old fashioned TIE Fighter destruction in Rogue Squadron ||, Multiplayer Super Smash Bros. (Which I still play). The Gamecube also was the reason for the release of the wireless Wavebird game pad, one of the best controllers in history.

9. Sega Genesis

This old-school classic lacks the SNES’s color, and of course its 3-D graphics, but what it lacks in present ability it more than makes up for in its memorable games, such as II, Revenge of Shinobi, Phantasy Star II, Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Sonic the Hedgehog and Rocket Knight Adventures. Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, Afterburner II and of course Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse added that Disney touch

8. Nintendo 64

Why did we put the N64 in ~8th and not lower? Simple. James Bond: GoldenEye. Other amazing games that caught our attention in this console in Super Mario 64 and Turok 2. We still play Turok to this day because of our experiences on the 64. N64 was expensive and couldn't match the PSone's cinematic power, but it was one hell of a console, with cool 3-D visuals and a well-designed controller.

7. Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

Most of you will remember this classic console which introduced us to the great classics such as Super Mario Bros and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Even though the need to blow in the cartridge a few million times to make it work annoyed us, our love for the NES never faltered and never will.

6. Sony PlayStation

This is a personal all time favourite of mine, going back to the days of me being 5 playing Pandemonium and such. Yes, I, as most other people had to flip the console upside down now and again to make it work properly, but technical difficulties do not a console break. I enjoyed the line-up of games which gave birth to the modern 3-D High end GFX games, such as Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Ridge Racer, Castellanies: Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Cross, Tenchu, Tomb Raider, Twisted Metal, Wipeout, Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo. This console clearly left one of the greatest legacies in gaming.

5. Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)

Nintendo took all the successes from the NES (and left the mistakes behind) to give us this elegant little console. For its time it features spectacular GFX, the best audio, and a comfortable controller. The SNES also gave us games such as Street Fighter II, Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox, Chrono Trigger, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, Super Mario RPG, Super Metroid, Contra III and Yoshi's Island -- all further solidified it as one of the best.

4. Nintendo DS

The fourth place was originally given to the Game Boy Advance, but as the DS came out, the Game Boy had to ship out, all due to the strong library, and the ability to play basically all of the GBA games. It is however, hard to argue with the design reminding us of the original iPod and at the time-sucking games such as New Super Mario Bros., Tetris DS, Jump Superstars, Ouendan, Animal Crossing and Phoenix Wright.

3. Sony PlayStation 2

The lack of any games that you would actually want to play made the PS2’s arrival a disappointing one, but Sony saw the mistake and gave us an avalanche of amazing games and hits. Metal Gear Solid 2 pushed the classics appeal into the new generation of consoles whole Gran turismo 3 gave us a racing game we could enjoy. The most popular PS2 game of the time was probably Grand Theft Auto III, with the 4th game still being eagerly anticipated. Just a cheap and bulky DVD player? I think not.

Playstation2

2. Sega Dreamcast

This console, at the time of launch was the hardcore gamer’s dream. When it came out it amazed gamers with the best graphics to date, and an astounding 56k powered online game play. The game line-up included great titles such as Chu Chu Rocket, Quake III, Samba de Amigo, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Typing of the Dead, Power Stone, Soul Calibur, NFL 2K, NBA 2K and a simply huge number of shooters, which helped the console build its reputation as one of the best, even if not as popular.

THE BIG ARGUMENT IS STILL GOING ON. XBOX 360 OR PS3?

1. Microsoft Xbox 360

Yes, we know, you have probably gotten the red ring of death, but there is simply no denying, and no argument that the Xbox 360’s is a simple must have for the home. It’s nearly three years old, and boasts an all time favourite and exclusive game, Halo 3. Other amazing titles include BioShock, Gears of War, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, and Dead Rising, Project Gotham Racing 3 and 4 and Crackdown. Let’s also not forget the other reason, apart from games, why the Xbox is so much better than the PS3, two words for you. Xbox Live. Add the most comfortable controller ever made and you have an amazing machine that destroys the competition.
