The best multiplayer experience on the PS3 today.
Have you ever thought of giving up gaming? Get back in that couch. I’ve got a story to tell.

The Call of Duty series is renowned as having the most
amazing and exiting collection of World War II-based
shooters. Now, the mastermind behind the operation, Infinity
Ward are taking the CoD series in another direction with
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. The 4th instalment
in the series takes place in our time, where terrorism and
Middle Eastern conflicts rule the news broadcasts. And to be
honest with you, it was about time. There was only so much
you could do with WW2.
Gameplay
This is one of the main reasons why Call of Duty is so
popular, and it deserves to be.. The game offers single and
multiplayer game modes. The campaign in Modern Warfare is,
in my honest opinion, the best in the entire series. The
modern environment helps you identify the situation,
utilising real and fictional conflicts. The story in a
nutshell is about a rogue Russian “ultranationalist” who is
in league with a leader of a Middle Eastern rebellion. (And,
being Russian myself, I never get tired of hearing that
accent). You, as a daring SAS agent, and also as a US Marine
have to stop them. Did I forget to mention that the Russian
has an arsenal of nuclear warheads. It’s the cold war all
over again, ey?
Multiplayer
But,
the true reason for buying this game, and why I personally
recommend it is the multiplayer. You can play it on split
screen or LAN. Join your clan pals for a small sided game,
or let it loose in a massive 64 man war. This is probably
the closest thing to Battlefield that the
Playstation 3 will
achieve this or next year. You can try the all time classics
of Free-For-All and Team Deathmatch or games that require
more skill and teamwork such as Domination, which is
basically like Battlefield 2 for
PC, the point of the map is
capture, and keep points. You get to pick a class, which are
very typical for the game: Assault, Sniper, Demolitions and
so on. You get experience points for capturing control
points, winning rounds, killing people, kill assists and
achievements. Once you reach a certain amount of XP you are
promoted to a new rank (just like war, ey?). This gives you
new weapons, perks and even camouflage tones. What are these
“perks”? Perks are variables which you can use in battle to
help you secure victory. Normally you can equip 3 of them,
but attachments count as one. One perk gives you extra
grenades, another gives you access to RPG launchers, and a
third to be able to hear your enemy. Also, once you hit
Level 4, you can create your own class, in which you choose
the weapons and perks for the class. Add challenges, things
like getting 25 kills with a weapon or 25 head shots and the
multiplayer component has tons of replay value. Of course,
gameplay experience will vary depending on your connection
speed, but thus far, my experience has been very positive.
The level up system is very addictive and the fire fights
capture the intensity of the single player experience.
Graphics
This, so far, is the best looking FPS on the Playstation 3. The character models are absolutely astounding, the scenery and textures and extremely realistic and the explosions are for lack of a better word real. (to be honest, this is one of the few games where a grenade has less power than a Nuke) Everything moves smoothly, and I myself have not experienced any lag, ever. You can blow basically everything apart, and shoot through many things, depending on guns. And the bullet holes DO NOT disappear, they stay until the map reloads. The levels themselves have had a lot of work put into them – it does really look like a war zone.
Sound
The best thing about the sound in this game for me was the sound acting. The British sound British, Americans sound American, and Russians…well…some things never change I guess. The voice is programmed well into the game, matching all the characters in my opinion. The music was also well designed and prepared, and is also used at precisely the right moments to give you a feel of the action. All the guns sound very realistic, and apart from just the firing, the impact sounds are also very real. In multiplayer, you can find where the action is by just listening in.
Lasting appeal
The single player experience is short. Unless you want to
beat the Campaign on every difficulty or get really hooked
in the Arcade Mode, it wont last you long. It is the type of
campaign you want to experience more than once though.
However, the multiplayer component is addictive and
immersive and is very easy to find a good match online. I
expect to be playing this game online until Call of Duty 5
comes along.
Fun Factor
With a deep never ending multiplayer mode, and also one of
the best FPS single player campaigns ever made, this game
will forever go down in the hall of fame. This is truly a
fun game. You will find yourself saying “Ill finish at 8” up
until you realise its about 12. I promise you, this is a fun
and addictive game, and if you don’t agree, ill eat a copy
of it.
