MMO's such as WoW and Guild Wars can be very confusing
places. They're packed with more stats than the FBI's
databases, filled with names containing more 'z's, 'x's and
punctuation then your school maths book, and often use a
gaming interface that will make you cry. Still, at least you
can find comfort in the knowledge of who your friends are in
those extremely crazy realms of massive multiplayer gaming.
But. You cant. While anyone who's used the internet for more
than a month will know that people online aren't always who
they say they are. They can be the other sex, a different
age, and its usually done as a joke, but sometime these
people are rapists and kidnappers and most people know all
to well not to disclose any private information. After a
study I made, it turns out that nowhere holds more people
masquerading behind fake identities more than the MMO's.
Nottingham Trent University has performed a study, being
published in a US magazine Cyber Psychology and the journal
Behaviour, which reveals that absolutely astounding 70% of
female players, use male characters, while a very
surprisingly high 60% of male players have female avatars.
After a bit of time we will learn that if we want to find
females, we look for the most manly looking character.
Maybe though, we shouldn’t be so surprised, considering the
basic gender characteristics still at play in
gaming. After
all, some female players have been known to take up a male
character, just to be treated better in the male-dominated
game, or to avoid stalkers in game (yes, they exist). While
male players purposefully become female characters just to
get that sleazy attention in order to flirt for help, and
scam innocent players of gold (check any gaming forum).
Worrying sign of the state of gaming culture, or another
amusing quirk of the internet? Like some MMO players, the
news is probably a bit of both. But just remember, while
mikes and cams help, abstinence is the only real safe-cyber.
The state of gaming culture is becoming very worrying. For
most MMO players this news is nothing new I am sure but I
hope the percentages listed above give you the idea. But
remember, while microphones and cameras help to identify
gaming buddies those too can be faked. It does seem that in
time, when we wish to find a person of a particular sex, we
will have to look at the opposite.
All said and done my mage character is actually female, but it is called Andymayo, and is an ugly troll, so it isn't like I'm pretending to actually be female. REALLY! lol :)
(for any one interested Matty here has a Blood Elf priest called electria and he tells everyone he is a girl and gets boosts and free robes! Proof that people will do anything if they think they have a chance of ... Ya know :p)
